It is the Soldier

For our Veterans and the Men and Women in the Military.

Thank you for your service. We don't say it often enough or loud enough. This country has remained free because of the sacrifices and patriotism of our men and women who have served their country for us. I am a Veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps with Pride. I thank those that, served before me, served besides me and serve after me.

It is the Soldier

It is the soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier
Who salutes the flag,
Who serves under the flag,
Whose coffin is draped in the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Author unknown by me. Please read below.

I have found this poem being attributed to several individuals (Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, U.S.M.C. - Charles M Province, U.S. Army - Stephen Ambrose), on the internet and in many publications. I have found it with all types of grammatical variations. I have not yet uncovered this poems true author. If you have any information or any input I would enjoy hearing from you.
